Why We Fell in Love with VW Campervan Holidays (And Why You Might Too)

Published on 7 July 2026 at 06:55

When we first started talking about buying a VW campervan, it wasn't because we wanted another vehicle. It was because we wanted more adventures.

Like many people, we'd spent years talking about getting away more often. The reality was that weekends disappeared, hotels were expensive, and camping always seemed to involve packing half the house before spending an hour trying to pitch a tent in the rain!

A campervan felt like the perfect middle ground.

Camping... but without the hard work

One of the biggest surprises for us has been just how easy everything becomes.

Instead of arriving at a campsite and immediately unpacking the car, wrestling with poles and hoping you've remembered where the pegs are, you simply park up.

Kettle on.

Chairs out.

Relax.

It's all the things we love about being outdoors—fresh air, beautiful scenery, evenings watching the sunset—but without the exhausting setup.

The freedom to explore

One weekend you can wake up by the coast.

The next, you could be surrounded by mountains, forests or rolling countryside.

That's what we love most about travelling in a VW campervan. You're not tied to one place. If you fancy exploring somewhere new, you simply drive there.

No living out of a suitcase.

Just freedom.

Surprisingly comfortable

I'll admit, before our first trip, I had one nagging worry...

My back.

Surprisingly, my back wasn't the issue I expected

I wasn't sure how I'd get on sleeping in a campervan, and I half expected to wake up feeling stiff after a night away.

As it turned out, I slept much better than I'd imagined. Everyone's different, of course, but it was one of those worries that disappeared after our first weekend away.

 Perfect for couples

Something we've learned is that honesty matters.

Many campervans are advertised as sleeping four people.

Technically, ours can.

Realistically?

It's perfect for two adults.

At a push, two adults and a small child.

We'd much rather people know exactly what to expect than arrive expecting a spacious family holiday. For couples, though, it's just right—cosy, comfortable and wonderfully simple.

Cosy is part of the charm

If you're picturing a super king-size bed, this probably isn't the holiday for you!

The bed is definitely cosy. My partner is 6ft 2, I'm 5ft 5, and we've become surprisingly good at negotiating sleeping positions. Let's just say there's no room for starfishing—but that's all part of the campervan experience.

For us, it's all part of slowing down, switching off and embracing a simpler way to travel.

Why we chose a VW campervan

There are lots of campervans available, but we kept coming back to the VW.

They're iconic for a reason.

They're compact enough to drive comfortably, easy to park, economical compared with larger motorhomes and have a timeless character that makes every journey feel like an adventure.

There's something about driving a VW campervan that instantly slows life down.

Ready for your own adventure?

Whether you're planning a romantic weekend away, a coastal road trip or simply want to escape everyday life for a few days, hiring a VW campervan is a fantastic way to see the UK from a different perspective. We just had a fabulous weekend at Silverstone, F1 Grand Prix.

We're only just beginning our own campervan journey and can't wait to help others create their own memories along the way.

If you've never tried a campervan holiday before, perhaps this is the year to discover why so many people fall in love with van life.

We'd love to welcome you aboard.
